Special K: Kaleena Smith.

A 40 point championship game, a family bond with her coach and a recruiting race that stretches coast to coast.

Kaleena Smith can fill a box score before an opponent has settled into the game. Her nickname, “Special K,” suggests the show. The more revealing story is what happens between the baskets: the pace she sets, the teammates she finds and the voice she has learned to use.

At Ontario Christian, the Class of 2027 guard has grown from a precocious scorer into the player who organizes a contender. The Los Angeles Times named her its 2026 girls basketball player of the year after reporting averages of 31 points, seven assists and four steals. Those figures tell part of the story. Her coach pointed to her leadership as the biggest change.

More than a scoring burst

The production has built over time. In 2025, Gatorade named Smith California girls basketball player of the year after a sophomore season in which she averaged 23.2 points, 8.1 assists and 4.5 steals through 31 games. Ontario Christian won the Southern Section Open Division title that season, with Smith making the late free throws against Etiwanda.

A year later, the Times described a guard whose numbers climbed as her team reached its first state championship game. Smith spoke about becoming more vocal as captain. For a point guard, that growth matters: she has to read the defense, steady a teammate and decide when her own scoring is the right answer.

Her summer belonged to Seven Days

On the 2026 adidas circuit, Smith turned a strong spring into a championship finish. In April, adidas reported 20 points, eight steals, six assists and five rebounds in Seven Days’ 68 to 39 opening win over United Mission. By July, the defending 17U champions were back in the title game against Southwest Select.

Adidas’ championship account records the answer plainly: Seven Days won the girls 17U 3SSB title, 63 to 58, for its second consecutive championship. Smith scored 40 points on 23 shots and was named the event’s MVP. Southwest Select had made the final difficult, but her late threes and creation off the dribble changed the game. This was a team title, with Smith delivering the defining individual performance.

Coach, stepfather, sounding board

Aundre Cummings has two seats in Smith’s life. He is her stepfather, and he is the Ontario Christian head coach. In a 2026 interview with MaxPreps, Cummings described their time in the gym as both work and conversation. They talk through basketball details and what it would mean to become state or national champions. He called their appreciation mutual.

That account gives a more useful picture than a simple father and coach label. Cummings sees the repetitions that never reach a highlight reel, as well as the moments when Smith surprises even the staff. He said she has learned to measure herself against the work ethic of successful smaller guards and refuses to get comfortable with her gifts. Smith’s reported words to him were about having to keep working because she does not have the size advantage of some taller stars. The relationship, as Cummings tells it, joins everyday instruction to a family bond: a coach asking more of his point guard and a stepfather sharing the long hours behind the result.

The recruiting board

College programs are lining up for the 2027 guard. CT Insider reported in July an 11 stop official visit plan: Washington, Baylor, Oklahoma, Georgia, Tennessee, Arizona State, Miami, USC, UCLA, UConn and Texas A&M. The same report noted earlier visits to Notre Dame, LSU, Syracuse, Cal and Louisville, without establishing whether those were official visits. A planned visit is evidence of active interest, not a commitment or a final list. In September, UConn’s staff visited her family, another concrete sign of its pursuit.

Where might she fit? UCLA is an intriguing local option for a guard who can turn pressure into pace and involve teammates before hunting her own shot. USC offers a similarly close to home stage where her range and late clock creation could bend defenses. UConn may be the sharpest test of her reads: its demanding movement and shared decisions would ask Smith to make quick passes after drawing a second defender, then relocate and strike again. Those are D1HYPE assessments of basketball fit, not statements that any coach has promised her a particular role. The key questions on each visit are who shares the backcourt, how often she can initiate offense, and how a staff plans to use her defensive activity.

The next chapter is hers to choose. This summer proved she could lead a championship team on a major shoe circuit. The college decision will be about where the scorer, passer and competitor can keep growing at once.
